NIGERIA AND CORONA VIRUS.

Can Nigeria Curtail Corona Virus?

I have been vocal and loud about how devastating it would be if this virus is allowed to enter this country.  As usual, Nigerian government had been boasting that it had put measures into place to prevent the outbreak of the virus if it manages to enter this country. We all knew that it was mere boasting, the only thing that the Nigerian government will ever put measures in place to prevent is impact to their own bogus revenue and allowances.

Since the outbreak of the virus in Wuhan Province, China, last year, the virus had spread to many countries in the world including Iran and Italy. This February, some African countries had recorded the outbreak of the virus, making the threat a reality to Nigeria.

Just yesterday evening, it was reported in the news that the first case of the virus was reported in Lagos Nigeria through and Italian expatriate who came to Nigeria.

The question on my mind is, has all the people that he came to Nigeria with been rounded up and quarantined? Has the government gotten a database on all the air hostesses and pilots who were aboard that airplane and have they all been secluded and given treatment before leaving the airport? You can be sure that nothing like that has been done.
Apart from the man, others must have been freed to go after few eye probing and limb checking activities, what a joke! Let us pray that they have truly put measures in place to prevent the spread.

Despite all these fake promises and assurances, I am deeply worried about the safety of Nigerians. Nigeria and Nigerians are not known for being careful; once it entered this country, only one case is enough to kill thousands of people within a relatively short period of time (if you don’t believe me, check the effect of the less harmful Ebola virus before it was finally curtailed).

I hate to say this, but in a few weeks’ time, (if no vaccine had been found for this virus before then), economic activities in Nigeria may be paralyzed because by then it would have spread to all the nooks and crannies of the country because of the level of carelessness and nonchalance with which our leaders treat issues that don’t affect them.

One of the leaders who shared my view about this is a Senator from Ondo State, Senator Ajayi Borroface who said on the floor of the house yesterday that when he landed at Nnamdi Azikwe international airport Abuja yesterday, there was no visible quarantine measures put into place at the airport, instead, he said the passengers onboard the incoming airplane were only given some stupid sheets of papers to write whether they were sick or not, can you imagine such stupidity?! Meanwhile, our neighbouring country, South Africa had delayed the passengers on an airline for thirty good minutes before they allowed them to proceed into South Africa. Within those thirty minutes, they had screened the passengers thoroughly.

Finally, my message to fellow Nigerians is that everyone should be at alert now and be careful of the way they relate with other people. This looks like one long battle and it had just begun. How far and how long it would go, no one knows but one thing is certain, the effect at the end of the day would be so devastating that its magnitude would be felt for years to come. Collectively, let us curb the spread of this menace.

If we depend on our dormant government, we won’t live long enough to tell the tale to our generations yet unborn. Rather, let us all rise up and be vigilant and protect our friends and families through proactive measures. God help us.
