A NATIONAL INSULT.

Hanan Buhari was received at Tafawa Balewa Airport, Bauchi by Top Govt Officials.

In one of my previous posts, I shared my candid opinion that the Nigerian Presidency has turned to a family business. I have received several comments after the post, castigating me that calling the Nigerian presidency a family business is - to say the least- uncalled for. I had apologized but it was an unapologetic apology, my view and stand about the subject still remain the same.

 Like a prophet, barely a week after my post, one of the president's family member did an unforgettable thing!

 Hanan Muhammadu Buhari just graduated with a first class in photography from Ravensbourne University, London and she is writing her project on Northern Nigerian culture.Hence, the need for her to travel to three selected Northern states viz Katstina (Her father's state), Bauchi and Kano and guess what, this trip was embarked on on the presidential private jet! Probably the presidential jet was given to her as a treat for graduating with good grades. In fact, I am sure that that was the deal.

 It is needless to say that her education over in London, must have been funded by tax payers money and that her private car would have been top notch and it must be bought and serviced by the same tax payer's money. All other expenses while studying would have been FREE (except it is not truly free, Nigeria must pay for it). Yet, this greedy consumption of the national cake is not enough, she has to travel on the presidential jet to do her project.

Having arrived at Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Hanan was picked up in a convoy of about 15 vehicles heading to the Government House In Bauchi where she was welcomed with pumps an pageantry. This is the highest level of insult to the intelligence of the hardworking and well meaning Nigerians. Are these people even aware of the unspeakable number of youths and young adults that graduate from different tertiary institutions both within and outside the country annually who are exceptionally good and who deserve to meet with the president for award and recognition but were never recognized?

 That aside, is the presidency, his family and his supporters aware of the number of thousands of Al-majiri kids that would be taken off the streets and sent to school with the amount of money that must have been spent on Hanan's education alone? Well, they don't know and they don't care even if they know!

 This is not the first time either, there have been several instances where the president's children and in laws had to ride in the presidential jet to private occasions and for personal purposes, all at the expense of the hailing economy. For a president that claims to be fighting corruption, this is - to say the least- a damning evidence that the president is myopic in his corruption fights if he cannot check the royal excesses of his own family.

“Perhaps, the Buhari Presidency forgot that it is public knowledge that the Presidential fleet can only be authorized for use by the President, the First Lady, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, former Presidents, Presidential delegation and no one else,” said PDP, the main opposition party. 

 It would have been better and cheaper for her to book first class flight on a public airline to her project sites. After all, not many Nigerians can even afford a bus fare from Abuja to Bauchi, which is why hundreds of Hausa men, women and children use to sit at the top of fully loaded trailers and full tanks going to Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, falling to their deaths on the way every week. How can these people even afford a flight in economy class to their destination?

 Obviously, the president's family wants to seize the last opportunity that they have to enjoy these benefits because they know that they are running against a deadline (2023). If they cannot be satisfied with the fleet of presidential cars that they have been riding for the past five years, and they feel that they must grace every occasion with the presidential jet that costs staggering amounts per trip, so be it. Let them enjoy it while it lasts. Jonathan and his family were there before this current family, today, they are history. One day soon, this family too will pass and a new family will get there. So let them use the public funds and properties for every inconceivable projects and purposes, one day when justice sits on the highest chair in the country and the voice of the common man is loud, clear and definite, we shall bring them all for questioning!
